The Importance of Annual Wellness Exams

Written by Dr. Catherine Rice –

Annual wellness exams are recommended for cats and dogs, just as annual doctor’s visits are recommended for you. Routine check-ups allow your veterinarian to do a complete physical exam, which can often detect a problem in your pet in its early stages. Problems detected early, before serious symptoms arise, are likely to be treated and resolved more easily with less expense.

Vaccines, heartworm testing, and fecal analysis are important components of annual wellness exams. Vaccines can help prevent life threatening diseases that may be difficult and expensive to treat. Routine heartworm testing, even if on preventatives regularly, is very important, as it helps to detect any resistance to heartworm preventatives. Fecal analyses are performed in order to screen for parasites that are not only harmful to your pet’s health but also may be spread to humans. A senior laboratory panel is typically recommended at an annual wellness exam once your pet reaches 7 years of age. At 7 years, dogs and cats are considered senior pets. The senior panel includes bloodwork and a urinalysis. This provides a great deal of evidence about the functioning of all internal organ systems, and can help your veterinarian detect early signs of organ dysfunction and disease.
